From Miss Laura’s Dance to The Dance Shoppe

Laura Hudson, “Miss Laura” as her students call her, began her dance career at 2-years-old. Over 35 years later, she is still dancing.

Laura began teaching dance lessons twenty years ago in Mobile, AL, where she danced as a child. She found that she loved teaching, especially preschool and beginner ballet, tap and jazz classes. In 2001, Laura moved to Clearwater and started the first dance program for the YMCA of the Suncoast. That first year at the Y, Laura taught just 30 kids. In only five years, Laura grew that program to include three branches and over 100 children ages 3-10 in dance lessons.

Soon after growing her YMCA dance program, Laura began teaching dance lessons at preschools and private schools throughout Pinellas County. Again, it started small (her first site-based preschool class in Palm Harbor included just six dancers!). Today, “Miss Laura’s Dance” includes over 200 children at 20 weekly dance classes at preschools and private schools throughout Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties including:

  • Barlow Little Palms Preschool
  • Espiritu Santo Catholic School
  • Greater Palm Harbor YMCA
  • Kids R Kids Westchase
  • LCC Day School
  • North Pinellas YMCA
  • Skycrest Christian School
  • Smart Start Pre-Prep
  • St. Luke ECC
  • St. Raphael Catholic School

The Dance Shoppe is Born

After years of hearing the question “where should we buy supplies for dance class?” from her school site parents, Miss Laura decided to open The Dance Shoppe in 2017. Her years of teaching, knowledge of brands and hands-on experience of what your child “really needs” for dance class makes The Dance Shoppe a trusted choice for Miss Laura’s dancers and all dancers in North Pinellas.

“There are so many dance brands these days…it can be confusing and overwhelming for parents, especially those with new dancers. There’s a tremendous difference between what your 3-year-old needs for a beginner ballet/tap combo class and what an experienced teen who dances five days a week needs for class. “Big box” stores might offer ballet and tap shoes and a low price, but that doesn’t mean you are getting quality for your money. At The Dance Shoppe, we won’t try to sell you a $50 pair of tap shoes for your beginning tapper, but what we will do is offer you the best quality and value for your money. From value brands for first-time dancers to top-of-the-line brands for advanced students…we have everything you need at The Dance Shoppe.”

You can find Miss Laura teaching at her school sites most days of the week, and at The Dance Shoppe with her family Thursdays-Sundays.

We love Dunedin. It’s always been our favorite spot to go on weekends for an ice cream or dinner with our two girls (also dancers). I’m thrilled to be a part of the retail scene in Delightful Dunedin.”

Laura also enjoys watching her girls at their after-school dance lessons and swim meets, chasing her 1-year-old son around The Dance Shoppe, and volunteering with her two favorite charities – The YMCA of the Suncoast and The Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin.
